ALCOHOL, DRUGS, AND ADDICTION

Addictions can be debilitating mentally and physically. Developing dependence on substances or behaviors like sex and gambling can train the brain to find enjoyment only through the addiction.

Noticing and reacting to early signs of addictive behavior is important because it can help mitigate long term health concerns and social consequences. A college campus can be enabling to certain addictions, but by being mindful of substance use and addictive behaviors you may help ensure that lifelong problems do not arise.

Signs of an Addiction

  • Engaging in the addictive behavior more often or in larger amounts than intended

  • Persistent desire to cut back without being able to do so

  • Craving the addictive behavior and/or spending a large amount of time thinking about it

  • Failure to fulfill major role obligations

  • Increased tolerance

Coping Tips for Addictions

  • Avoid high-risk situations where you are likely to engage in the addictive behavior. This could be a place, a friend group, or even a state such as fatigue or loneliness.

  • Focus on positive thoughts and practice finding gratitude in every situation.

  • Re-purpose energy from anger or cravings into something creative or constructive.

  • Build a support system for your sober life with family, friends, and a support group.

  • Make a commitment to truth. Addictions tend to make lying a habit that will distract from the nature of the problem and work against your recovery efforts.
